Book 1: SCHOOL SPIRIT
Ages 8 and up. Little Brown Books for Young Readers June 2008.
The Story: When Kat reluctantly discovers that she has inherited her mother's gift of communicating with the dead, she's not exactly
thrilled. It's hard enough surviving the trials and tribulations of middle school with her new best friend, famously known as the Cello Girl. Part supernatural tale and part comedy, Kat takes on the spirit world and the miseries of the school cafeteria, determined to find out
who she is and who she wants to be.
The Inspiration: I loved the idea of a mother/daughter relationship that is loving and affectionate, but struggling to overcome the fact that Mom talks to dead people - definitely as uncool
as it gets in the world of seventh grade. I've been fascinated with the supernatural all my life, and consulted with a renowned medium who told me what it was like growing up with the ability to see the dead.
